A supervisor is first and foremost an overseer whose primary responsibility is to ensure that assigned production is completed by a group of employees, whilst maintaining acceptable levels of quality, cost and safety.

If you’re a supervisor and you fail to take action or delay in taking action when something isn’t quite in order, not only are you condoning the unsafe activity, but you’re also encouraging it.

To be a successful safety supervisor, you must be clear about the role that you play by being a leader in regards to safety. It is essential that you are aware of the legal framework in which safety operates.

Remember, a supervisor can assign responsibility, but can’t give away accountability… the supervisor is ultimately accountable.

However, the role of a supervisor is far too complex to be summed up in a few sentences!
