National/Scottish Vocational Qualifications
• Health, Safety and Environmental Management in the Extractive and Minerals Processing Industries
This is the recommended award for all supervisors and managers within the industry. Available at level 5 for directors, senior and area management, level 4 for middle and quarry management, and level 3 for supervisory and junior management.
• Plant Operations (Extractives)
Available for all mobile plant found in the industry.
• Processing Operations for the Extractive and Minerals Processing Industries
Applicable to all processing operations in the industry; crushing , screening, washing, drying, heat treatment, density or chemical purification, processing sand, clays, asphalt, concrete , mortar, cement. Available at level 2 for operators, level 1 for plant assistants, and level 3 for those with wider responsibilities.
• Weighbridge Operations
Originally designed for quarry weighbridges, but is also equally applicable for stock yards, warehouses, processing plant, waste recycling or disposal and any other weighbridge.
• Drilling Operations (Extractives)
Applies to drilling holes for blasting and also exploratory drilling.
• Blasting Operations
The whole award is available for shotfirers, and is the cornerstone of the QNJAC recommendation for shotfirer competence. Also includes awards for explosive supervisors, explosive store men, face profilers and blast designers.
• Bulk Explosive Truck Operations
The award specific to this specialist function.
• Mining Operations
A wide range of options makes this applicable to all underground operatives.
• Supervision of Underground Mining Operations
For pit deputies and others involved in supervising underground operations; not just for extracting minerals, but also covers storage and tourist mines.
• Roadbuilding (Construction)
• Highways Maintenance (Construction)
• Construction Site Supervision
• Construction Site Management (Highways Maintenance)
These awards cover the building and repair of roads and similarly constructed structures. Awards are available for operatives and also for those involved in supervising or managing sites.
Qualification and Credit Framework Awards
•Level 3 Award in the Principles of Managing Health and Safety in the Extractive and Mineral Processing Industries
• Level 3 Certificate in the Extractives and Mineral Processing Industries
• Level 3 Diploma in the Extractives and Mineral Processing Industries
These awards provide essential knowledge for those wishing to enter or have recently entered the industry.
Vocationally Related Qualifications
• Level 2 Award in An introduction to Extraction and Mineral Processing
• Level 2 Certificate in Extraction and Mineral Processing
• Level 3 Certificate in Extraction and Mineral Processing
These awards provide the basic knowledge required by Apprentices and can also be useful for other new entrants to the industry. There are a wide range of optional modules supporting different occupations and N/SVQs.
